Reflections on skepticism and scientism in David Hume

In pre-Enlightenment times, in light of the sovereignty of reason and science, David Hume, in the Treatise on Human Nature, undertook the task of creating a science of human nature based on the investigation of mental faculties and their relationship with the objects of knowledge. By developing his epistemology, the philosopher simultaneously paved the way for significant consequences both for his project and for the history of subsequent philosophy. After addressing his “mental geography” exposed in the Treatise, this article aims to bring to light, among such consequences, reflections on 1) the skepticism addressed by Hume, and on 2) the scientism that permeates his intention to develop a science of human nature. Starting from the theoretical-bibliographical methodology of a qualitative nature, we aim to critically analyze the academic discussion on skepticism and naturalism in his philosophy, arguing in favor of its practical character alongside skeptical and, with regard to point 2, in favor of a return to the important question about the relationship between science and philosophy.
